Michael Brinkworth is a Berlin-based, world-travelling, guitar and harmonica wielding troubadour, originally hailing from Brisbane, Australia, with a backpack-full of heart-felt road-worn songs. He has honed a unique songwriting and performing style and developed his own idiosyncratic take on alternative-folk with a country-soul twist. His sound is equally at home with the classic generation of singer-songwriters of the 60s and 70s and the lo-fi pop-infused indie rock and alternative country eras of the late 80s and 90s, with an authenticity and candidness to match. Sustained by his ever-evolving set that is as diverse as it is dynamic, he enjoys taking his audiences on a journey that gets down to the heart of everything, keeping it spontaneous and making every concert a new experience.
After finishing university, he spent spent the best part of his twenties, from 2009 until 2013, vagabonding around 40+ countries, across 6 continents, hitch-hiking 40 000+ km, meeting countless characters, accruing too many travel tales to remember let alone tell, working every odd-job under the sun, all the while writing songs and building on his craft, performing anywhere from the West End Markets of Brisbane or in front of a Woolworths supermarket in the centre of Australia (Alice Springs) to sub-zero temperatures on a winter’s night in Reykjavik, Iceland, to the subways of Montreal and New York to the beach bars of El Salvador and gringo-filled cafes in the highlands of Guatemala, from the streets of southern Spain, Portugal and Morocco, to tip-bucket gigs in Nashville to impromptu Burning Man sets in the Black Rock Desert to busking the cool dimly-lit bars of Berlin. Since mid-2013, Berlin has become somewhat of a home-base for him, forming various projects such as the songwriting folk-duo, The Red Town Blues, and the alt-country-rock-quartet, WreckHeads, before finally embarking on his own solo project.
Following a brief tour in the USA in 2015 and releasing a home-produced EP, Stranger (recorded/engineered/mixed by Eric Timmann), he recorded his first full band album at Funkhaus Studios, Somewhere To Run From (recorded/engineered/mixed by Michael Bennetsen), which was independently released in June 2016. Since then he has played countless shows with various formations of his band and solo around Berlin and throughout Europe. Amongst his continuously busy concert schedule, a lo-fi EP recorded on a 4-track tape recorder with two of his bandmates, Tim Granbacka and Fritjof Brandt, Weird Ones, was released last February, and he recently returned from Finland where he undertook recording sessions for what will make up his next album. New developments happened after signing a publishing deal with Greywood Records, who will be re-releasing, Somewhere To Run From, on October 20th, 2017, including additional live tracks recorded with his band at The Famous Gold Watch Studio. A live concert release of his full band in their prime, recorded over 2 nights will be coming soon after. With the support of Greywood Records and a new album already in the works for 2018, he has an ambitious schedule of touring planned throughout Europe and Australia into the new year.
